Gardiner's letter to Franz Werfel encloses a page-proof copy of his article entitled "Mars and the Muses in 1917," which was to appear in the upcoming issue of America; he invited Werfel to comment on the subject of war and literature. Werfel responded to Gardiner's article with an untitled essay in which he reminisces on his experience as a writer during wartime in 1917 and comments on the contrasting situation of writers in the context of the ongoing world war. It is unclear whether the essay has been published.
